Day 12: 2/26/2016
Turtle Bay to Asuncíon

We departed Turtle bay this morning around 7:30 am and are buddy boating with Sea Witch and Pura Vida to Asuncíon. It's approximately 50 NM to our next anchorage.

Winds are light out of the NE with following seas. We motor sailed throughout the day averaging 6 knots, SAS-(Scooby Approved Sailing). The sun is shining and It's warm enough to wear shorts. Yay!!! Myron started the genset to make water to fill our tanks around 9:45 am. I'm looking forward to a hot shower later.

We anchored in Asuncíon at sunset clocking in at eleven hours travel time. Mark from s/v Hop Toad was anchored here with Sea Witch and Pura Vida.

Day 13: 2/27/2016
Asuncíon

Asuncíon is a beautiful village lined with palm trees. The main industries are the cannery and fishing co-op.

We ventured to shore in the dinghy where Scooby and I got soaked. Myron of course stayed dry. Next time I'll jump out of the dink when he does. As we pulled the dinghy further into shore to tie off to a rock we noticed that Scooby had found a dead seal and figured it would be a good idea to roll on it. Oh the wonderful aromas of doggy perfume! Another saltwater bath for Scoobs before we walked main street looking for a bite to eat. We past by several small shops before finding a birria (stewed meat with broth) stand.

After lunch we went to the grocery store and headed back to the boat. We were hauling the dinghy onto the davits when Liz hailed us and explained that Brian and her attempted to go to shore until their dinghy engine failed and had to paddle back to their boat. We had just topped off with fuel in Turtle Bay so we offered some of our reserve fuel so that they could also top off.

We arrived to Pura Vida with a 5 gal jerry jug of diesel and twelve pack of Tecate to celebrate another beautiful afternoon. Liz made Pina Coladas and we all shared highlights from our trip and future plans. Brian and Liz are also in their early 30s. Sea Witch joined us for sunset where we continued to share laughs. Jeff and Gail have logged over 700,000 NM under Sea Witch's keel including their circumnavigation. They could fill a book detailing their experience in the Red Sea just after Sept 11, 2001. I'm very happy they are buddy sailing with us greenhorns.

Just as we were about to head back to Discovery two curious seals popped up and played off the port side of Pura Vida.

We were in bed by 8:30 as we had an early morning to Abreojos.

Day 14: 2/28/2016
Asuncíon to Abreojos

Pura Vida, Sea Witch and Discovery departed Asuncíon for Abreojos at 6:30am. The sun was rising as we all departed. All sails are up as we head another 50 NM South. Winds were 10-12 knots out of the NE earlier this morning but quickly off. Motor sailing was again.

We tossed the hand line out with a cedar plug at 11:30am hopping to hook a yellowfin. The line dragged until we were outside of entrance to Abreojos. No fish.

Abreojos translates to "open your eyes," perfectly named since there are eight hazards that line the entrance to the anchorage. Hazards range from submerged rocks to shallow shoals. We plan on anchoring near Campo En Medio which is also known as a park and ride to Laguna San Ignacio Whale Park. The lagoon is a safe haven for whales to give birth, court, and mate. We need to hire a licensed guide in order to enter the park. Rangers only allow so many visitors a day depending on whale activity.

We anchored down just after 5 pm. Anchor beers! This will complete our fifth leg of the trip to La Paz.

Day 15: 2/29/2015
Abreojos

We woke to another beautiful sunny morning. Myron sent a blanket message across channel 16 to hire a ranger to go to San Ignacio Whale Park. We never heard a response from anyone so Jeff on Sea Witch, with the powerful VHF, tried hailing a ranger. He was able to reach someone who said they would put us in contact with an English speaking guide but to much avail we never heard anything back. We were all very disappointed that we couldn't go to the lagoon but hoped we see the whale while underway.

In the afternoon Pura Vida hailed and stated that their windlass (equipment that lowers and pulls up the anchor) had stopped working and they weren't sure why. Myron volunteered to take a look at the problem to see if he could diagnose and fix it. After a couple of hours spent disassembling, inspecting, and reassembling, he had it working. Since everything looked fine when it was apart, our only guess is that it was jammed from the anchor banging during a patch of rough seas.

We invited everyone over to Discovery for happy hour and dinner. Liz and Brian's dinghy engine was also down due to bad gas so we gave them a ride on our dinghy just as the wind came up and ended up getting soaked from head to toe. At least the water was warm. Gail and Jeff didn't want to venture out in the waves and end up soaked like us so they didn't make it over.

After a fresh change of clothes for everyone, Liz made fresh sashimi and nori rolls with the yellowtail that they caught the day before. It was incredible! We spent the night getting to know each other better and laughing over drinks.
